A Scrapbooking History

Okay. This is gonna be embarassing. But I've never been one to allow humiliation to get in the way of a good blog post, so here it is: A Pictoral History of My Scrapbooking Ability. Yes. I'm going to show you the old ones... the REALLY old ones!

Back in 2003, I started a "scrap" book. I say "scrap" because it was made from literal scraps... movie ticket stubs, programs, pressed flowers. I had no idea there was a scrapbooking "world" out there... didn't know about patterned paper, or letter stickers, or any of that amazing stuff. I was just a 22 year old girl, making an album about my engagement: It's funny and special to look at now... check out those zig-zag cut photos! I flagrantly ignored all rules of design and had fun doing it.

Then my cousin gave me an entire box of scrapbooking supplies for my wedding in August 2003. OH. MY. GOSH. I nearly imploded... there was stuff for this?! Sign me up! I found Creating Keepsakes magazine and went crazy making an album about my honeymoon:
I ate, breathed, and slept scrapbooking for six months. And then I couldn't stand it anymore! I focused so hard on getting every page perfect that it was exhausting. So I quit.
In 2007, I started to re-consider scrapbooking. I saw Elsie Flannigan's pages in Creating Keepsakes and realized that scrapbooking could be spontaneous and fun. So I decided to start scrapbooking again, and made "All About Me" (alternately titled "I'm Going To Try Every Single Technique I Can Think Of On One Page"):
Whew! Embellish much? I was so excited about the concept of scrapbooking myself, and I knew this was something I wanted to continue doing. I scrapbooked all summer and fall, trying out an artsier style than I had when I first started. I loved the idea of freestyle scrapping, just going with what I felt and being spontaneous. I made this layout in September 2007, and it was one of the first pages I felt good about:
I didn't scrap much that winter, but in February 2008 I decided I wanted to enter the CK Hall of Fame contest. I worked so hard on my submission and put my whole heart into it. My style was getting a little bit more linear and better composed as I realized that I wasn't as drawn to the artsy, random look I used to be. This is one of my HOF submissions:
Of course, I didn't make it into the Hall of Fame, but I was determined to continue. I loved this hobby! I continued to refine my style and started using my sewing machine on layouts:
In April 2008, Rachel invited me to join Scrapbooking from the Inside Out, and it rocked my scrapbooking world. For some reason, scrapping within the confines of a kit really changed my style... in the best way possible. I started using my sewing machine on almost every page, and I grew so much as a scrapbooker over the next six months. In December 2008 I made this page with the Regret Kit:
It's the first page where I see the reflection of the scrapper I am today... I still love this page a year later, and I can't say that about the former pages!
I continued my sewing streak and started appreciating colors other than pink. In April 2009 I made this page:
I think it's very "me": hand cutting, journaling strips, stitching. I'd like to think those are my trademarks!
Now it's November 2009, and I've made hundreds of pages! I learn more all the time and hopefully I will continue to grow into a better artist. This is one of my most recent pages, made in October 2009:

I still see that old scrapper in there: bright colors, a love of embellishments, lots of patterned paper. But I see a lot of changes, too, and I'm glad of that. Who knows where I'll be in another 5 years?

New Music (brought to you by the Letter M)

So... I've been listening to a lot of good music lately and I thought I'd tell you about it. Oddly enough, all the artists start with "M."

Matisyahu is a Hasidic Jew that sings reggae music... interesting, huh?
I got his new album Light as soon as it was available. I was hoping I would like it as much as I liked his first two albums, and I wasn't disappointed.Light is really good. What I like about Matisyahu's music is the positive themes and upbeat sound. I also love that the lyrics are so meaningful. I've been thinking a lot about my own mortality lately (must be because 30 is coming up!) and I love the lyrics from "Nature": "We are men of nature/we are made from the earth/at the end of my eighty/I'll return to the dirt." The song (and most of the album) is about making the most of the time we have. I love that.

I've also been digging Mutemath's new album Armistice.
Dan got it for me from the library (he always picks out the best music for me) and I'm a little obsessed with it. I've listened to it more times than I care to admit to... it's just that every song on the album is good, and that doesn't usually happen! My favorite song is "Odds." If you know me, you know that I love the idea of change and growth, so the lyrics from"Odds" just really resonate with me: "I know it's hard to say/throw it all away/but the odds are/we'll be better off/and it's a painful thought/to try another slot/but the odds are/we'll be better off." One of the unique things about Mutemath is their amazing drummer, Darren Strong. Somehow Mutemath manages to make really mellow songs that still have a driving drum track. Very cool.I found Mama Kin through Emily's blog. I watched the video of "You Tore My Heart Out" and immediately went and bought it from iTunes! The song is an incredible mix of slow/sad and fast/angry. You've got to listen to it; the video is here.
Mama Kin is from New Orleans and I can't wait to hear their new album. Okay... this last one is EMBARASSING!! I heard it on the radio and loved it, but I'm almost ashamed to admit I like it (plus, it doesn't start with an "m"). Usually I steer clear of lyrics like "E'erbody getting crunk/boys trying to touch my junk" (seriously?!), but Ke$ha's (yeah...a dollar sign!) song Tik Tok is irresistible to me... it makes me want to dance and I love it. I can't help it!
So... that's what's on my "faves now" playlist... what's on yours?

A year ago today/plotting

One of the nice things about having a blog is getting to look back and see what I was doing exactly a year ago today. And ironically enough, I was still thinking about my niece Hailey! (see yesterday's post). I posted this layout on November 18, 2008: And as I was updating my Flickr sets, I saw this mosaic image of my layouts...
Makes me so happy! I love seeing all that color.
Today I have been plotting our 2009 Christmas cards. I think I want to do them quite differently this year... usually they end up being fairly labor-intensive (or labour-intensive for my British readers :), and I am NOT wanting to repeat that this year. Plus, I want to include photos in this year's newsletter... do you send Christmas cards? If you do, do you make them yourself? Do you write a note in each one or send a newsletter? How many do you make? I usually make around 70 cards, so I'm looking forward to a simpler design this year!
Come back tomorrow for a giveaway. :)

Remembering

Oh, man. I am so tired... I've been suffering from insomnia recently and it makes me appreciate sleep SO MUCH... you know how that is? You don't appreciate something til it's gone. Like when you have a cold and you can't breathe through your nose, and you swear to yourself that once you can breathe through your nose again, you will cherish it!!! Of course, after the first few minutes of regaining nostril freedom, you forget to be grateful and take it for granted once again.

Well, that is how I feel about memories. I made this layout about my niece Hailey because I never want to take her childhood for granted. She grows so fast, and I know some day I will look back and think, "I never truly appreciated her childhood." So I scrapped one of my favorite memories of her... it's already been three years ago!

Hopefully, documenting the little moments like this one will help me to appreciate them more.

What's a small thing that you are grateful for?
